Disability Equipment

Disability EquipmentThere are numerous organisations serving the Burgess Hill area that provide support, assistance and equipment to help keep people mobile.                  

Age UK
Age UK have published a very useful fact sheet with regard to equipment which is available on the Age UK website visit www.ageuk.org.uk.
 
Clearwell Mobility
Clearwell Mobility are a company who sell, hire and repair disability aids. Their main shop is in Brighton however they also have a showroom and warehouse in Burgess Hill. For details on where to find them and the products they offer visit www.clearwellmobility.co.uk.

Motability
Motability is a national charity supported by the Department for Work and Pensions that helps people to use their government funded mobility allowances to have a new car, powered wheelchair or scooter, on either a contract hire or hire purchase scheme. For more information please telephone: 0845 456 4566 (8.30am till 5.30pm Monday to Friday) or visit www.motability.co.uk.

People in West Sussex can continue to use the AskDES service to buy and sell second hand disability equipment thanks to ICIS. AskDES was previously run by the charity Voice for Disability which has sadly had to close. AskDES enables people to sell or give away disability equipment that is no longer needed and to buy second-hand equipment such as a walker, mobility scooter and many aids for daily living. The cost of advertising equipment is free for anything under £100 and only £10 for items that cost more. The advertisements are published on the AskDES website for up to a year. To advertise your item go to the website www.icis-info4life.org.uk and click on the AskDES button. For help with buying or selling and for more information about AskDES ring ICIS on 01903 859929. ICIS is a charity that helps people in West Sussex find services and support. Registered charity no: 1095945.

A downloadable guide called ‘Practical Guide for Disabled People’ can be viewed on the Department of Health website and contains information on where to obtain disability equipment. 

The Salvation Army Charity shop at 103 Church Walk, Burgess Hill will accept donations of disability aids.

Wheelchairs
To obtain a wheelchair on a permanent basis contact The Wheelchair Centre at Crawley and Horsham Hospital, Telephone 01403 227000 and ask for ext 7160.  The opening hours are Monday to Thursday 8.30am to 4.30pm and Friday 8.30am to 4pm. A referral will be required from your GP or Occupational Therapist.

Wheelchair Hire
Wheelchairs are available for hire from the Red Cross:
Burgess Hill – 01444 871536 (Monday 10am-12pm – to collect/return between these times). Not bank holidays.
Haywards Heath – 0800 5878929 (Tuesday, Wednesday & Friday 10am-12pm ).
