Crossroads
Social Club provides
respite care so that carers can either have a break to go shopping etc or

Carers Allowance
Carers
Allowance can be claimed by people who are unable to work full time
because they are spending at least 35 hours a week looking after a sick or
disabled person who is in receipt of Disability Living Allowance or
Attendance Allowance. The carer may not be able to claim Carers
Allowance in full if they are already receiving certain other benefits
such as Incapacity Benefit, Retirement Pension, Widow’s Pension or

Carers can carry
an Emergency Alert Card so that if something happens to them the emergency
services will be made aware that they have a dependent. The scheme
is a joint project between ICIS, West Sussex Social and Caring Services,

Sussex Health Services. Carers can apply for the card by ringing the

Peter & St James Hospice Befriender Plus Project
The Befriender
Plus Project extends the existing befriending service to support carers of
older people with a life-threatening illness in Mid Sussex. The aim
is to give dedicated time to the carer, for approximately 6 weeks,
depending on their needs. The ultimate aim is to relieve carer
stress and enable them to maintain their own health, specifically their
mental health. The befriender works with the carer and the cared-for in
their own home, providing practical help and a signposting service to help
the carer access other major services. Specific programmes of care
are tailored to meet the needs of carers from minority groups. Referral is
via the hospice’s Community Palliative Care Nurse. Contact 01444
