WEST SUSSEX ASSOCIATION FOR THE DISABLED

WSAD provides information, advice and services to disabled people.  There are local groups in Hassocks and Haywards Heath.  Telephone Hassocks 01273 832510 and Haywards Heath on 01444 455558.

THE ADVOCACY FOR INDEPENDENCE (AFI)

This is a new service to help disabled people voice any concerns.  They help disabled people speak up for themselves, or when they don't feel they are being listened to or treated with dignity and respect.  To find out more telephone 01903 753666.

DISS (DISABILITY INFORMATION SERVICES SUSSEX)

Diss, previously known as DIAL, exists to empower disabled people in Sussex so that they may lead active and fulfilling lives integrated in the wider community.  They offer free, confidential and independent information, advice, home visits and a representation service.

Disabled Bays

You can ask West Sussex County Council to consider creating a disabled parking bay 
outside your property if you meet the following criteria:

  • Disabled Badge Holders Only

  • Must be claiming full mobility allowance, if under 65.

  • If over 65, Social Services need to approve application.

  • No other facility for parking (no garage or driveway)

They can also help with repairs.  Clearwell can send to a report to an Engineer who will phone the customer to see if they can solve the problem over the phone.  If need be, they can collect the scooter for a call out fee.

Domestic VIOLENCE 

There is a drop-in facility at The Yews, 55 Boltro Road, Haywards Heath on Tuesday 12.30pm-2.30pm .  No appointment is necessary. Anyone needing advice for themselves, a friend or relative, or simply needing someone to talk to, can speak to an adviser.  You can speak in complete safety, privacy and confidentiality to people who understand and have the power to help.  The service is completely free and no appointment is needed.  If you are unable to get there in person, you can telephone during drop-in hours on 07961 022443.  The Drop-in Coordinator can be contacted on 07961 022443.

Donations

Burgess Hill Town Council operates a Grants and Donations Scheme to promote a vibrant and active community in Burgess Hill.  The scheme recognises and supports the valuable contribution made by the voluntary sector to the well-being of the community.  It provides financial support for community organisations working for the benefit of residents, with the intention of improving the range of services and activities in the town. 

Types of Grants

Minor Grants of up to £1,000 are awarded twice a year, in June and November.  Applications will be considered for revenue (i.e. running) costs as well as capital costs.  The deadlines for applications are 30 April and 31 August.  The Minor Grants forms can be downloaded as follows: Application Form, Conditions of Funding, Guidance Notes.

Major Grants of more than £1,000 are awarded once a year, for capital costs.  Applications for revenue will only be considered if exceptional circumstances are demonstrated.  The deadline for applications is 30 September. Cosmic is a support group for families, friends, carers of people who have problems with drugs.  The group meets on the first Tuesday of every month between 7-9pm at Summerfold, 152 Leylands Road, Burgess Hill, telephone 01444 247998.
