In
2000 the Council established a Mobile Maintenance Team to improve the
appearance of the town and provide a quick response to issues raised by
residents. The team is responsible for maintaining the Town Council buildings and offices,
as well as 33
acres of public open space, a nature reserve, a children’s playground
and sports area, 5 allotment sites, 3 churchyards, public seats, litter
bins, bus shelters, notice boards and the flower beds on the roundabouts
and amenity areas.
This
work is undertaken in partnership with Garden Pride Garden Centre, sponsor of
many of the town's planting schemes and the annual Burgess Hill in Bloom
competition, and the
Council’s grounds maintenance contractors, KPS Contractors Ltd.
The
Team, Nick
Setford, Paul Robinson and Julian Thorpe also undertake a range of delegated functions from the
District and County Councils. This is aimed
at improving ‘housekeeping’ issues around towns, such as weeds in
gutters, sign cleaning, repair and maintenance
of street nameplates, control of fly-posting, etc. In addition to
their maintenance duties and responding as the ‘outdoor’ Help Point, Nick,
Paul and Julian and also undertake bulb planting and oversee improvements to
roundabouts such as that on London Road.
They work in partnership with other organisations and
personnel, including the maintenance staff of Burgess Hill’s two
shopping centres, local volunteer groups, the District Council’s contractors
and businesses who sponsor the council’s roundabouts and amenity areas.
All in all there are many players in Team Burgess Hill. For
