Strategic Planning & Economic Development

Burgess Hill Town Council is committed to taking a lead role in the future development of the town and its economy in partnership with its community, the Local Planning Authority of Mid Sussex District Council and the Highways Authority of West Sussex County Council.  To achieve this, the Town Council has established a Strategic Planning, Economy and Transport Key Area Group of Councillors who work with the Town Clerk to consider the future development of the town.  The Town Council has also created a Burgess Hill (Councillors) Three Tiers Group which involves Councillors from the Town, District and County Councils working together for the long term prosperity of the town on a cross party basis.

The Town Council is working with partners to:

• revitalise the Town Centre on the basis of the approved Town Centre Master Plan;

• encourage economic development, inward investment and sustainability through the Strategic Planning process and working with partner organisations; and,

• address the holistic infrastructure needs of the town through a town-wide strategy as outlined on the Strategic Vision page.

The Town Centre Master Plan has been approved by Mid Sussex District Council and presents an exciting future for our town centre.  The plan includes a significant increase in retail offer, a replacement community arts facility, a new library, town square, a new department store and restaurants and cafes.  The Town Council believes that it is good scheme and provides a strong foundation for the redevelopment of the town centre that will to meet the future needs and prosperity of the town.

New plans for the Martlets Shopping Centre

In the meantime, Burgess Hill, like many market towns across the country, is suffering from the effects of the recession.  Residents, visitors and people working in the town are asked to support the Burgess Hill economy during these difficult times and to “Buy Local”.  A new Town Centre Partnership has also been established to promote Burgess Hill as a retail destination and provide a range of entertainment and events in the town centre.  The founding partners are Market Place Shopping Centre, Martlets Shopping Centre, Burgess Hill Town Council and Mid Sussex District Council.

Burgess Hill is the Ideal Business Location

Burgess Hill provides the perfect business location at the crossroads of the Sussex transportation network. The Victoria Business Park, the second largest in Sussex, has a direct link road (A2300) to the motorway network (A 23/M 23). Burgess Hill is also close to Gatwick Airport and less than an hour from Heathrow. It is also served by two railway stations, Burgess Hill and Wivelsfield, on the main London to Brighton line. Burgess Hill provides the perfect work/life location being part of the Gatwick Diamond Enterprise Hub, the Capital to Coast LEP and located on the edge of the South Downs National Park and close to the Sussex Coast. It is home to a range of successful companies ranging from CAE to Porsche and has expansion land available. The 20 year town strategy also includes additional employment space. Discussions are also being held with the University of Brighton regarding the possibility of a Science/Business Park immediately west of the town.

Burgess Hill is a strong community with a wide range of community interest groups, good schools, first class leisure facilities and a good range of housing at reasonable prices.
