SUSSEX INN SIGNS & THEIR HISTORY SPEAKER: DR. JANET PENNINGTON – On-line Talk
The Burgess Hill Horticultural Society is hosting a talk on Sussex Inn Signs and their History on 1 July.
The talk is by Dr Janet Pennington who undertook her PhD on Sussex Inns and Taverns and looked at the History and Architecture of the Pubs, Inns and Taverns of Sussex and is the acknowledged expert on the subject. There is a small charge of £2.50 to join the Talk online which can be booked through our website at https://www.burgesshillhorticulturalsociety.com/zoom-events. where full details can be found.
Inn signs were, and still are much more than an external advert for food, drink and accommodation. The signs and their supporting brackets reveal a fascinating history of patronage, land ownership, social status and local personalities and events. Janet will explain how they are still full of meaning for us in the 21st century. If you think you know your White Horse from your Red Lion or your King’s Head from your Royal Oak – sign up for our Zoom talk and learn something new!
Dr Janet Pennington taught local history and palaeography at the University of Sussex for many years and also worked as an archivist for Lancing College. Her talks and guided walks are noted for their enthusiastic and lively style. Janet’s PhD on Sussex Inns and Taverns means she’s probably been in more pubs than most people, (purely for research purposes, of course …)
