Outdoor Maintenance

The Town Council undertakes a wide variety of maintenance and enhancement programmes throughout the town on behalf of the Community.  A small selection of services are shown below:

Batchelors Farm
Batchelors Farm comprises of 33 acres of pasture land on the south side of Burgess Hill.  It was purchased by the Town Council in 1993 for the benefit and enjoyment of Burgess Hill residents. 

With sweeping views across open countryside to the South Downs, Batchelors Farm has become a popular beauty spot and is well used by local people, and is maintained by Burgess Hill Town Council’s Maintenance Department.

   
     
Bus Shelters
Burgess Hill Town Council provides some of the bus shelters in our town which the Maintenance Team keep clean.  If you need to report a problem with any of the shelters please contact the Help Point by phoning 01444 247726 or emailing helppoint@burgesshill.gov.uk
   
     
Christmas Lights
The town's Christmas lights are provided by Burgess Hill Town Council with a donation from the Chamber of Trade .  If you require information on the lights please contact Steve Cridland on 01444 247726 or email him at steve@burgesshill.gov.uk.
   

Dog Bins
Dog owners have a responsibility to clean up after their pets and to assist with this Mid Sussex District Council place dog bins on their leisure land and Burgess Hill Town Council has bins on the land that we maintain.  West Sussex County Council does not place dog bins on the highway for Health and Safety reasons.

Flyposting
Under the 1980’s Highway Act flyposting is illegal and makes out town look tatty not to mention dangerous as drivers take their eye off the road when trying to read it.

The Maintenance Team keep a sharp eye out for it and remove it straight away.  If you notice any then please contact the Help Point by phoning 01444 247726 or emailing helppoint@burgesshill.gov.uk.

   

 


Flytipping

In 2006 Mid Sussex District Council spent £32,000 clearing 330 incidents of fly tipping.  It spoils our town and is illegal.  For information on how to dispose of commercial waste please visit www.midsussex.gov.uk.

Folders Meadow
Burgess Hill Town Council undertakes to keep our children’s play areas clean and safe as a delegated function on behalf of Mid Sussex District Council.

If you see anything within our play areas that are cause for concern please contact the Help Point by phoning 01444 247726 or emailing helppoint@burgesshill.gov.uk.

   
     
Footpath Clearance
Burgess Hill has a high percentage of urban public rights of way and Burgess Hill Town Council appreciates the importance of keeping these paths clear of vegetation to allow them to be used without difficulty. 

We liaise closely with West Sussex County Council’s Public Rights of Way department and the Maintenance Team undertakes two cut backs a year.  However if you notice a path that needs a trim please contact the Help Point by phoning 01444 247726 or emailing helppoint@burgesshill.gov.uk..

   


Graffiti
Burgess Hill Town Council’s Maintenance Team undertakes the removal of graffiti in Burgess Hill so if you come across any please contact the Help Point by phoning 01444 247726 or emailing helppoint@burgesshill.gov.uk.. 

   
     

Litter Bins
The majority of litter bins in our town are provided by Burgess Hill Town Council.  If you would like to put forward a new location for a bin or report a damaged one please contact the Help Point by phoning 01444 247726 or emailing helppoint@burgesshill.gov.uk.

   

 

     
Notice Boards
Burgess Hill Town Council has placed 18 noticeboards around our town which are used to display Council information and posters advertising events for non-profit making organisations. 

If you would like us to display your notices please bring 20 copies (A4 portrait only please) into the Help Point.  Posters are put up subject to space.  To report a damaged notice board please contact the Help Point by phoning 01444 247726 or emailing helppoint@burgesshill.gov.uk.

   

Seats

Burgess Hill Town Council provides seats around our town so if you have an idea for a new location or notice a broken or vandalised one please contact the Help Point by phoning 01444 247726 or emailing helppoint@burgesshill.gov.uk.
   
     
Shopping Trolleys
Shopping trolleys, if not returned to the store can be an eyesore if left around our town and can also be used for anti-social behaviour. 

If you see an unattended trolley please let the Help Point know on 01444 247726 or email helppoint@burgesshill.gov.uk.  We will then contact the relevant store to arrange for it to be picked up.

   
     
Street Lights
The majority of street lights in our town are the responsibility of West Sussex County Council, with the Town Council also having responsibility for some. 

If you need to report that a street light is not working or it is damaged all you need to do is contact the Help Point on 01444 247726 or email helppoint@burgesshill.gov.uk.  It would be helpful if you could obtain a column number and give us the precise location of the light.

   
     
Street Nameplates
Burgess Hill Town Council receives a sum of money from Mid Sussex District Council to undertake repairs or replace the street nameplates in Burgess Hill.  Where ever possible the Maintenance Team will try and repair a sign but if a new one is needed then we take the opportunity to standardise the design throughout our town.

The following functions are undertaken by West Sussex County Council:

APL's, Blocked Gulleys, Epicormic Growth, Highway Sign Cleaning / Damage Repair, Overhanging Vegetation, Street Lights, Weeds

EASING PARKING CONGESTION: This service is to assist residents encountering problems with parked vehicles blocking their driveway. Subject to permission being granted, West Sussex County Council will paint an Access Protection Line, a white 'H' shaped line, onto the road to draw attention to the driveway or access. The charge per driveway is £144. Blocked Gulleys
West Sussex County Council's Team will clear or jet blocked gulleys at the side of the roads.

Epicormic Growth
Epicormic growth is the ‘twiggy’ bits that grow out from the bottom of a tree usually into a road or over a footway. West Sussex County Council are responsible for cutting back this growth.

Highway Signs
West Sussex County Council undertakes to keep our highway signs clean and will also repair any damage that occurs. 

If you see a sign that needs a clean or is damaged please contact the Help Point on 01444 247726 or email: helppoint@burgesshill.gov.uk and we will pass your report on to the relevant County Council team.

 
Overhanging Vegetation
During the growing season we ask you to make regular checks on your plants, hedges or trees to make sure that they are not growing over the pavement and forcing people to walk on the road. 
If there is a complaint about this, West Sussex County Council will to write to the householder which often causes offence but is done in the interest of public safety.  If you have difficulty in getting past some vegetation please contact the Help Point on 01444 247726 or email: helppoint@burgesshill.gov.uk and we will pass your report on to the relevant County Council team

Potholes
To report a pothole it is important that you give an accurate location and how deep and wide you think it is. Please contact the Help Point on 01444 247726 or email: helppoint@burgesshill.gov.uk and we will pass your report on to the relevant County Council team


Street Lights

Weeds
West Sussex County Council undertakes annual weed sprays on kerb side vegetation in Burgess Hill.
