Strategic Planning & Economic Development

NewRiver Retail submitted [to Mid Sussex District Council] a formal planning application for a £65 million revitalisation of Burgess Hill Town Centre. This was approved in March 2016.

The proposal features a 10 screen Cineworld Cinema, a 63 bed Travelodge hotel, 142 residential units, a purpose-built modern library, 283 additional car parking spaces and an extra 70,000 square feet of retail space.

NewRiver’s plans show a high quality modern design, with glass fronted retail units at ground level and town centre apartments above. A pedestrianised walkway will continue to link Church Walk and Civic Way but the retail units either side will be enlarged to attract big name retailers to the town. The Heights commercial building will be demolished to make way for the 93,000 sq ft Cineworld cinema and a 7,700 sq ft library will provide a new active frontage at street level along Civic Way.

NewRiver Retail have produced a virtual tour of what the development might look like, this can be seen by clicking on the above link.

Burgess Hill is the Ideal Business Location

Burgess Hill provides the perfect business location at the crossroads of the Sussex transportation network. The Victoria Business Park, the second largest in Sussex, has a direct link road (A2300) to the motorway network (A 23/M 23). Burgess Hill is also close to Gatwick Airport and less than an hour from Heathrow. It is also served by two railway stations, Burgess Hill and Wivelsfield, on the main London to Brighton line. Burgess Hill provides the perfect work/life location being part of the Gatwick Diamond Enterprise Hub, the Capital to Coast LEP and located on the edge of the South Downs National Park and close to the Sussex Coast. It is home to a range of successful companies ranging from CAE to Porsche and has expansion land available. The 20 year town strategy also includes additional employment space. Discussions are also being held with the University of Brighton regarding the possibility of a Science/Business Park immediately west of the town.

Burgess Hill is a strong community with a wide range of community interest groups, good schools, first class leisure facilities and a good range of housing at reasonable prices.
