On Friday 17 July Church Walk came to life with live music, food trucks, and free activities! The new event, Boogie at the Bandstand, was bought to you by Burgess Hill Town Council, and saw local residents dancing, singing, and enjoying the atmosphere. One attendee said “Boogie at the bandstand was a brilliant use of the space on Church Walk, perfect for a Friday summer evening. We came for the final hour and really enjoyed the atmosphere and the band. The food trucks also added to the nice vibe.”
Boogie at the Bandstand is the first of its kind in Burgess Hill, and the Town Council are seeking your feedback. This will help shape the future of events like this one, including the possibility of multiple dates, the kind of music played, and any other additional entertainment you think would make this event even better. Boogie at the Bandstand kicked off with Keziah and her vintage vocals, followed by the Sussex based community choir, the Buskerteer’s. During their performance they were collecting money for the Mayor’s chosen charity BHT. Up next was Faith and her line dancing, she had people up and moving, trying their chances at Line Dancing whilst Stu Barbour was providing the music. Joe Parrott who is a Burgess Hill high-energy folk cover performer was up next and had people singing along and moving their hips to a range of different music.
The headliner for the evening was Saved by The Band who covered classic hits from the 80’s, 90’s and 00’s. People were singing along, and enjoying the evening atmosphere.
All that dancing worked up an appetite! We had Siena Pizza serving out authentic Italian pizzas, Gourmet & Chill cooking up street food, Jesse and Rojo’s Crepes were providing sweet and savoury delights. As well as Burgess Hill ran, Rosie’s Brew and Bites providing the ice coffees and sweet treats. This was all alongside local bars and restaurants being open on Church Walk.
During the event Burgess Hill Town Council provided free activities with expert coaches, including Southcoast Skate Club, where kids were able to try out skating. There were circus skills with Joyous Flow Arts, kids (and some adults) had the chance to juggle, plate spin, and have a go at circus skills. Jolf were set up in the Stone Wall Garden, providing people with the chance to give golf a go in a fun environment. The trampolines from Dave Hunt Leisure were very popular, providing a fun area for kids to jump, climb and slide.
A huge thank you to Mid Sussex Radio for providing the sound, and assisting with the musicians and performers. The event wouldn’t have been such a success without you. As well as Burgess Hill Yarnbombers and Burgess Hill Creative Community for the colourful decorations that brightened up the bandstand.
Another person said “Free activities for children. My children enjoyed the skateboarding and softplay. The live music gave a lovely atmosphere to the town. It’s lovely to have something that brings people to town, especially a family friendly event like this which suits all ages.”
The Leader of the Town Council, Councillor Peter Williams says “I thoroughly enjoyed attending the event and seeing so many residents dancing to the music, on what was a beautiful summer evening. As it was our first ever, ‘Boogie at the Bandstand’, it was fantastic to see such a great turnout and such a positive atmosphere throughout.”
