Economic Development

Burgess Hill Town Council is committed to taking a lead role in the future development of the town and its economy in partnership with the community, Mid Sussex District Council and West Sussex County Council. To achieve this, the Town Council has established a Strategic Development Key Area Group of Councillors who work with the CEO to consider the future development of the town.

The Town Council is working with partners to:

– Revitalise the Town Centre on the basis of the approved Town Centre Master Plan.

– Promote the development of the Northern Arc which will provide upwards of 3000 houses along with schools and modern infrastructure, two business parks and a Science Park.

– Develop a flexible community space in the centre of town to accommodate performances and other community activities.

– Encourage economic development, inward investment and sustainability through the Strategic Planning process and working with partner organisations.

– Address the holistic infrastructure needs of the town through a town-wide strategy.

Burgess Hill provides the perfect business location at the crossroads of the Sussex transportation network. The Victoria Business Park has a direct link road (A2300) to the motorway network (A23 / M23). Burgess Hill is also close to Gatwick Airport and less than an hour from Heathrow. It is also served by two railway stations, Burgess Hill and Wivelsfield, on the main London to Brighton line. Burgess Hill provides the perfect work / life location being part of the Gatwick Diamond Enterprise Hub, the Capital to Coast LEP and located on the edge of the South Downs National Park and close to the Sussex Coast. It is home to a range of successful companies ranging from CAE to Porsche and has expansion land available. The 20 year Town Strategy also includes additional employment space. Discussions are also being held with the University of Brighton regarding the possibility of a Science/Business Park immediately west of the town.

Burgess Hill has a strong community with a wide range of community interest groups, good schools, first class leisure facilities and a good range of housing at reasonable prices.

Mid Sussex District Council
Mid Sussex District Council’s ambition is to develop the economy in a sustainable way that creates high value jobs whilst preserving the District’s character and natural assets. Central to that ambition is the strategic growth programme for Burgess Hill – the biggest growth programme in the South East.

The programme will bring to the area some £1billion in inward investment. That investment will deliver 5,000 new homes, over 15,000 jobs (including construction jobs), major improvements to key roads, new primary and secondary schools, increased capacity at GP practices, improved leisure facilities, and full-fibre digital infrastructure that will meet the needs of 21st century businesses.

To help deliver the programme Mid Sussex District Council has established an Economic Development Team. Working closely with partners and stakeholders the team has developed a new Economic Development Strategy which was launched in June 2018. The Strategy sets out how MSDC will deliver strong economic growth in the district through a focus on four themes: Place, Premises, People, Promotion.

You can find out more about the Strategy and the Economic Profile which helped inform the Strategy at the Mid Sussex District Council Economic Development Strategy webpage.
